"As a queer oil painter and multidisciplinary artist, I explore the domination and commodification of animals; the “non-human experience”. From a very early age, I’ve had a strong connection and compassion for animals. This has made me an advocate for all living things, even those considered pests and livestock. How can I inspire the audience to have these hard conversations and dig deeper into their personal role as “the consumer”? Through my careful handling of the paint to create illusionary and distressing depictions of convenience and explotation, it grounds my intentions and allows my sardonic irony, symbolism, and viscera to enrapture and evoke empathy. I communicate a cynical, humorous tone to highlight the absurdity of the systems we are complicit in.
In an overly-saturated visual culture, driven by commerce, attention is a currency and hard to come by. So, feast upon the delicate details, juicy textures, buttery blending, and candy colors: all apparently to satisfy the viewer’s delight, hunger and reward captivation. These purposefully painted with a bright candy-colored color palette to mimic marketing schemes meant to allure and deceive. Showing a complex reality where persuasive advertisement, seductive fiction, and harsh brutality have blended into an indistinguishable imagery of content, consumed throughout our everyday life. Thinking about how we are subjected to and benefit from these systems ourselves."
